Safety online

Protecting your email account
Staying safe online
Michal Garman
Head of Information Security (CISO)

As the number of cyber attacks in the online world continues to increase, rest assured Ruffer has robust procedures in place to ensure the safety of our clients’ online portfolios against criminal activity.

Many of these attacks occur when an individual’s personal email account is compromised by cyber criminals, often as a result of people clicking on links or attachments received in an email. These links can enable the installation of malware (malicious software) on your computer or device, or allow the criminal access to send fraudulent emails from your account (for example to transfer funds to the criminal’s bank account).

To help keep your email account safe, our Technology team has put together a list of suspicious behaviour to look out for and ways to help you protect your accounts.

  • Use a strong, unique password specifically for your email account. Don’t use the same password across different online accounts or services.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) (also called two-step verification) on your email account. This is where a code is sent to your phone, or you use an authenticator app as part of the login process. This will add an extra layer of protection and is available for most popular email services. Check with your email provider for more information. Gmail  |  Hotmail/Outlook  | Yahoo Mail
  • Keep an eye out for unexpected email requests to make changes to your account or personal details, even if they appear to have come from a trusted source.
  • Report unusual or suspicious emails to your email provider as spam or phishing, this will help them block similar emails.
  • Regularly review your email account for suspicious behaviour, such as emails from companies or people you don’t recognise and emails which include attachments.
  • Keep software on your computer and mobile devices updated to protect against vulnerabilities. This includes scheduled updates to your operating system (Windows, Apple iOS, Android etc), internet browsers like Chrome or Firefox and all applications.

If you are a Ruffer client and have concerns about any communication from or to Ruffer, please call your usual Ruffer contact as soon as possible.
