Responsible investment

Articles and thoughts on our approach to responsible investing
Responsible Investment Report
In this quarter’s thought piece, Responsible Investment Manager Peter Lunt and Investment Director Harry Sevier explore the challenges involved with feeding a growing global population. They look at the risks and opportunities in the future of food security, and how these are reflected in Ruffer portfolios. We also include the usual update on our stewardship activities throughout the quarter.
Annual Stewardship Report
Our 2021 report highlights the depth and breadth of our stewardship activities. Our focus on engaging directly with company management has afforded us a deeper understanding of the companies in which our clients are invested.
Villains to heroes
Banks are rarely the first port of call in a responsible investor’s portfolio. The preference has been to allocate capital to companies directly involved in climate risk mitigation – electric vehicle manufacturers or renewable technology businesses. But financial services have a pivotal part to play in the transition to Net Zero and investor engagement is critical in determining how banks stand up to the climate challenge.
Responsible Investment Report
In our latest quarterly report, Investment Director Harry Sevier looks at the crucial role banks can play in facilitating the transition to Net Zero. We also include the usual update on our stewardship activities throughout the quarter.
Fixing the framework for fixed income
Earlier this year, a Ryanair passenger flight heading from Athens to Vilnius was alerted to an onboard bomb threat whilst flying over Belarusian airspace. It was subsequently ordered to make an emergency landing in Minsk, escorted by a fighter jet. However, the true motive behind the forced grounding soon became clear, as political activist Roman Protasevich was swiftly removed from the plane and detained by the Belarusian government.
Responsible Investment Report
In our latest quarterly report, Research Associate Alexander Jones explores the framework we have designed to help us achieve a holistic understanding of fixed income risk. Elsewhere we present Ruffer's participation in the CDP Non-Disclosure Campaign, as well as stewardship activities from the fourth quarter of 2021.
How a pinch of salt can help the energy transition
They are fundamental in powering our lives: lithium-ion batteries. Lightweight and durable, we use them in our phones, laptops and increasingly in our cars. Already, they seem embedded in our society, but the electric revolution is only just beginning.
Responsible Investment Report
In our latest quarterly report, Investment Associate Sophie Jamieson looks at one part of the energy transition story which is often overlooked – batteries. Specifically, we look at the merits of shifting from lithium-ion to sodium-ion technology. Elsewhere, we share details of our stewardship and engagement activities during the third quarter of 2021.
Climate Change Framework 2021
Our inaugural TCFD Report introduces Ruffer’s Climate Change Framework and provides a response to the recommendations of the Taskforce for Climate-related Financial Disclosure. The report exhibits our climate-related activities over the past few years and provides an insight into how our understanding of the risks facing our investee companies has evolved.
Responsible Investment Report
In our latest quarterly report, Investment Manager Rory Goodman examines the global significance of US President Joe Biden's new emission reduction targets announced at the Earth Day summit, and we share our stewardship and engagement activities during the second quarter of 2021.
